How It Works

Most posture devices try to force your body into a particular position. Stro takes a different approach.

Rather than pulling your shoulders back or restricting movement, Stro changes how different postures feel. By resting just below the collarbones, the weight subtly changes the balance of the upper body, making slouched positions feel heavier and upright positions feel lighter and more balanced.

The fulcrum effect

Imagine holding a hammer close to the metal head. It feels light and easy to control. Now imagine holding the same hammer by the very end of the handle. The weight hasn’t changed, but because it is positioned farther from your hand, it suddenly feels much heavier and harder to balance.

Stro applies a similar principle to the upper body. You can think of the center of your torso as acting like a fulcrum. When you slouch, the weight moves farther away from your centre of balance, increasing the force pulling on your neck. As a result, the device feels heavier.

When you lengthen through the centre of your torso and align your body into a more upright position, the weight moves back into balance and immediately feels lighter.

The feedback is instant: when your posture collapses, you’ll notice the increased pull on your neck and shoulders. When your body finds a more balanced position, that sensation decreases.

Training, not support

Unlike a brace, Stro does not hold your body in place. Instead, it asks the muscles responsible for maintaining posture to do the work themselves.

At first, you may find that maintaining good posture feels easy for only five or ten minutes before fatigue sets in. Over time, however, those muscles adapt and become more capable of supporting the position for longer periods.

Many people unconsciously rely on muscles around the neck and shoulders to hold themselves upright, particularly after years of sitting at desks or looking down at screens. By encouraging a different posture, Stro may redistribute some of this effort throughout the torso and upper body, potentially reducing feelings of tension in areas such as the upper shoulders and the base of the skull.

Learning balance

Learning to use Stro is similar to learning to ride a bike. At first, balancing may require a bit of conscious effort. Over time, however, your brain and body learn to make thousands of tiny adjustments automatically until balance becomes second nature.

Stro is designed around the same idea. Rather than reminding yourself to sit up straight every few minutes, your body gradually learns to recognize the difference between balanced and unbalanced positions.

When you wear Stro, your body naturally adjusts in response to the feedback it receives. With repeated use, maintaining good posture may begin to require less conscious effort, just as balancing on a bicycle eventually becomes automatic.

A training tool for seated use

Stro is intended to be used while seated and looking straight ahead, such as when working at a computer.

Its purpose is not to support your body passively, but to help you actively engage with your posture by making it something you can feel, rather than something you constantly have to remember.
